<title type="html">German Drama Class Performs Die Physiker</title>

<p>Dr. Reinhard Zachau's German Drama class worked hard to put together a performance of "Die Physiker" by Friedrich Dürrenmatt.  Informed by the Second World War and the many recent advances in science and nuclear technology. The play deals with questions of scientific ethics and mankind's ability to handle its intellectual responsibilities. The play was first performed in Zürich in 1962 and has remained popular in the decades since.  The class memorized their lines and put on a great performance, and Kathe Richter filmed and edited it. </p>

<p>On April 21, 2013 Dr. James C. Davidheiser, National President-Elect of Delta Phi Alpha and Chapter Advisor at Sewanee, and together with Dr. Reinhard Zachau, initiated 10 new student members into Delta Phi Alpha, the National German Honor Society: Lewis Affronti, Seth Austin, Arianna Burkhardt, Julia Galliher, Amanda Lopez, Rebecca Manseau, Richard Percy, David Prichard, Kathleen Richter and Jacob Walker. Students with high grades in German, a high GPA and an abiding interest in the study of the German language and culture are eligible to join as of their fourth semester of university study and their presence in an advanced German course. The members received a certificate of membership, a booklet on the Society and an honor cord in black, red and gold, the colors of the German flag. The formal ceremony finished with refreshments in the dining room of the German House on University Avenue.

<p>At its most recent meeting the German Honor Society, Delta Phi Alpha, elected Dr. Davidheiser to be their new president.  He formerly held the post of vice president.  The group met at the annual conference of ACTFL (American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages), which was held in Philadelphia, PA in November of 2012. </p>

<p>Prof.  James C. Davidheiser spoke at the Lunch and Learn series at St. Mary's Spiritual Center on Dec. 13 on the following topic: "Why are Fairy Tales so Popular Today: What is Behind this Popularity?" Prof. Davidheiser traced the recent popularity to the 1980s and reviewed the many forms in which fairy tales appear today. He also discussed the reasons for this upsurge and gave a lively narration of "Rapunzel" by the Brothers Grimm.

<p>Dr. Gregory H. Wolf, Class of 1989, met with his two Sewanee German professors, Dr. Jim Davidheiser and Dr. Reinhard Zachau, at the national conference of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in Philadelphia, PA, in November 2012. Upon graduation from Sewanee, Dr. Wolf earned a Ph.D. in German Studies at The Ohio State University. In 2012 he was named the Dennis and Jean Bauman Endowed Chair of the Humanities. Wolf is professor of German at North Central College, a comprehensive liberal arts college located in Naperville, IL, thirty miles west of Chicago.

<p>On Oct. 18, 2012 Prof. James C. Davidheiser spoke at Evenings at Clement Chen Hall, a monthly gathering of faculty, staff and students at the home of the Vice Chancellor. His topic, "How a Professor Came to Highly Value the Brothers Grimm and their Fairy Tales," covered the history and meaning of fairy tales as well as the astounding achievements of the Grimm Brothers and their effects on German history and culture. To set the scene Prof. Davidheiser opened with a lively telling of the famous tale, "Rumpelstiltskin."
Each fall Davidheiser teaches "The Literature and Culture of Fairy Tales" in English and will be teaching  a fairy tale course in German on the 300-level in the spring, 2013. Davidheiser's book for the course, Die Märchen der Brüder Grimm, his second on fairy tales, was published in 2011.

<p>Prof. Davidheiser is chair of the national Planned Giving Committee of his professional association, The American Association of Teachers of German. In that capacity, he presides over meetings of a committee that seeks to insure the strength and longevity of the organization by finding long-term donors. He recently authored a brochure to send to members of the organization.

Delta Phi Alpha again this year and will meet in November with officers of the Society. Delta
Phi Alpha initiates highly qualified and recommended students of German into the association.
It also evaluates German programs across the country for membership in DPA.</p>

Viktoria Knotz from the Univ. of Karlsruhe lives in the German House as the recipient of Sewanee's scholarship for student members of the Federation of German-American Clubs. </p>

<p>At a colorful luncheon on March 5, Dr. James C. Davidheiser was presented with a certificate and gift in honor of his 35 full years of service to Sewanee: The University of the South. The ceremony took place in Cravens Hall where Dr. Davidheiser was congratulated by both the Vice Chancellor, Dr. John McCardell, and the Provost, Dr. John Swallow. His wife Marilyn and several colleagues from the foreign language departments were present as well.</p>
