<p>Lillian Winchester, recipient of the full scholarship from the Federation of German-American Clubs, and David Pritchard, participating in Sewanee's direct exchange with Bamberg, are both studying this year at the Univ. of Bamberg, Germany. Viktoria Knotz from the Univ. of Karlsruhe lives in the German House as the recipient of Sewanee's scholarship for student members of the Federation of German-American Clubs. </p>

<p>At a colorful luncheon on March 5, Dr. James C. Davidheiser was presented with a certificate and gift in honor of his 35 full years of service to Sewanee: The University of the South. The ceremony took place in Cravens Hall where Dr. Davidheiser was congratulated by both the Vice Chancellor, Dr. John McCardell, and the Provost, Dr. John Swallow. His wife Marilyn and several colleagues from the foreign language departments were present as well.</p>

<p>On March 4, the German Department inducted 7 students into Delta Phi Alpha. DPA is a national German Honor society with thousands of members from campuses across the country. At a semi-formal ceremony in the German House, Dr. James Davidheiser, national Vice President of DPA, inducted the following students into the honor society: John Robert Carter, Edward Randall Floyd, Margaret Hervey Hudson, Curtis Robert Middlekauff, William Thomas Noggle, Denton Lee O'Neal, and Lena Margaret Viljoen.  Dr. Reinhard Zachau presented them with official certificates of membership while Katherine Hardin and Patrick Platzer, both present members of DPA, handed them a booklet about DPA and hung honor cords around them in the German national colors, schwarz rot gold, which they will wear at graduation.

<p>Sommer in Sewanee will take place this year June 17th-June 30th, 2012.  The cultural topic will be "Wanderlust: Reisen in Deutschland, &#214;sterreich und der Schweiz", and will explore the German fascination with travel and offers workshops in the many beautiful regions of the German-speaking world.  This is an excellent opportunity for teachers and students of German to deepen their knowledge of German language and culture. </p>

<p>Sixteen Sewanee students will spend part of their summer in Berlin with the "Summer in Berlin" program, the German Department's new study abroad opportunity, which is directed by Dr. Reinhard Zachau. The program includes a three-week language course at Berlin's Deutsch in Deutschland German Language Institute. The afternoons are spent exploring Berlin's neighborhoods following the excursions described in Zachau's Berlin Walks, Berliner Spazierg&#228;nge published by Focus in 2010.  Sewanee students will return with an appreciation of Berlin's history and architecture and its rich literature.</p>

<p>From Feb. 9-16, Sewanee will be holding its own German Film Festival, the Sewaneenale, to coincide with the International Film Festival being held at the same time in Berlin known as the Berlinale. The festival opens with a red carpet gala at the German House featuring a viewing of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, followed by a showing of F.W. Murnau's Faust at 7 p.m. in Gailor Auditorium on Friday, Feb. 11. Then on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m., you can see Marlene Dietrich in The Blue Angel. All of these films are emblematic of the Weimar Period. Fatih Akin's Soul Kitchen brings us into the modern era and closes the festival on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 8:30 p.m. at the German House. The Sewaneenale has been organized by German House Head Resident, Florian Seubert.</p>
