Students of German and Business toured the Chattanooga Volkswagen plant on February 8. They met with Emily Noggle, an alum, to find out about internship opportunities. The tour was arranged by the Babson Center for Global Commerce.
]]>Dr. Reinhard Zachau's German Drama class worked hard to put together a performance of "Die Physiker" by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Informed by the Second World War and the many recent advances in science and nuclear technology. The play deals with questions of scientific ethics and mankind's ability to handle its intellectual responsibilities. The play was first performed in Zürich in 1962 and has remained popular in the decades since. The class memorized their lines and put on a great performance, and Kathe Richter filmed and edited it.

]]>On April 21, 2013 Dr. James C. Davidheiser, National President-Elect of Delta Phi Alpha and Chapter Advisor at Sewanee, and together with Dr. Reinhard Zachau, initiated 10 new student members into Delta Phi Alpha, the National German Honor Society: Lewis Affronti, Seth Austin, Arianna Burkhardt, Julia Galliher, Amanda Lopez, Rebecca Manseau, Richard Percy, David Prichard, Kathleen Richter and Jacob Walker. Students with high grades in German, a high GPA and an abiding interest in the study of the German language and culture are eligible to join as of their fourth semester of university study and their presence in an advanced German course. The members received a certificate of membership, a booklet on the Society and an honor cord in black, red and gold, the colors of the German flag. The formal ceremony finished with refreshments in the dining room of the German House on University Avenue.

Join Dr. Martin Knoll, professor of geology at Sewanee, for a pictorial tour of southwestern Germany and the Dachstein Alps of Austria as he highlights an environmental studies course he teaches there each year. The course compares the natural and cultural aspects of watersheds in these areas with those of the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee. Knoll blends his rich family history in Germany into the fabric of the course. Dr. Knoll will be joined by Denton O'Neal, a senior who made the trip with Dr. Knoll and worked on a project in Germany and Austria.
